Explore Green Lakes State Park

Bright greenish blue water is a rarity this far north of the Caribbean but you can see this beautiful shade of green at Green Lakes State Park in central New York. This is a must see if you are near Syracuse, NY. The park has two gorgeous green lakes, hence the name. The park has many amenities with walking trails around both lakes and surrounding areas. There is an 18 hole golf course, playground and beach. Green Lakes is conveniently located 15 minutes off I 90, just outside of the city of Syracuse.

Interesting fact, the two lakes are an unusual green color due to the high levels of calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate reflects the green wavelength and we see the beautiful green color. You can see the green color best when the sun is shinning on it.

  • If you only have 1-3 hours to spend here, I recommend taking the walk around the lakes. The trail is beautiful and something different to see in each area of the trail. With the abundance of picnic table and beautiful view, bring your picnic food of choice and enjoy some time with family and friends.

  • More than one day, look at their campsites and cabins that are available and immerse yourself even further into this beautiful spot in central NY
  • If you have small kids, pack your stroller and let them walk & explore the trail around the main lake and when they get tired of walking they can hop into the stroller with the promise of the playground and beach at the end of the trail. • Dogs are also welcome on the trails as long as they are leashed and you clean up after them. Many dogs enjoy a swim in the lake, so bring a towel!
